How to Organize Under-Desk Cables for a Cleaner Work and Gaming Setup

Many desks look fine at first glance—until you peek underneath.
That’s where loose wires and floor clutter usually start to pile up, making the setup harder to use and maintain.
The before-and-after photo above shows how a few simple cable management steps can make a big difference.

Here’s how to do it step by step.

Step 1: Prepare Your Cable Management Tools

Before starting, gather a few basic cable management tools. The tools you need depend on your desk setup, but just a few basics can make the process much easier.

Useful tools include :

Must-Have Tools:

  • Cable Split Sleeving – for combining multiple cables into one tidy bundle

  • Cable Tray / Cable Basket – for holding power strips, adapters, and cables

  • Cable Ties – for bundling loose wires together

  • Scissor – for trimming ties, sleeves, or raceways

Optional Tools:

  • Adhesive Clips – for guiding smaller cables and keeping them in place

  • Cable Raceway – for creating a clean, visible path along a wall, desk leg, or edge

  • Measuring Tape – for measuring cable and sleeve lengths accurately

Tip: Snap a quick “before” photo—you’ll love seeing the difference when you compare it with the finished setup.

Step 2: Remove Unused Cables

Go through the cables under your desk and remove anything you don’t use anymore.

This may include:

  • old charging cables

  • extra adapters

  • unused monitor or accessory cables

  • loose wires from devices no longer in use

Removing what you don’t need first makes the rest of the setup much easier to organize.

Step 3: Group Cables by Path and Use

Once you’ve removed unused cables, group the remaining ones by where they need to go and how they’ll be used.

For example:

  • cables running from the desktop down to the PC

  • cables leading to the power strip

  • cables that need to stay easy to reach for daily use

It also helps to separate cables that will stay bundled from those that need to remain more accessible.
This makes it easier to decide which cables should go into a sleeve, be tied together, or be routed into a tray, basket, or raceway.

Step 4: Install a Cable Tray or Cable Basket

If you’re using a cable tray or cable basket, this is the time to mount it under the desk.

Choose a spot that is easy to reach but not too visible from the front. In most cases, the back edge of the desk works best. Before mounting, make sure there’s enough space so it won’t interfere with your legs or other equipment.

Once it’s installed, place the power strip, adapters, and extra cable length inside first. This helps clear the floor and makes the next steps easier.

Don’t cram everything in—leave some space so you can adjust cables if needed.

Step 5: Bundle Main Cable Runs with Cable Split Sleeving

Once the main cable paths are clear, start bundling the most visible cable runs with Alex Tech Cable Split Sleeving.

This works especially well for:

  • monitor cables

  • speaker cables

  • power cables

  • cables running from the desk to the PC

Our cable split sleeving is easy to install. You don’t need to unplug your devices—just open the sleeve, place the cables inside, and let it wrap around them. You can also trim it with scissors to the length you need.

This helps organize loose wires into a single bundle, giving the area a much neater look.
Start with the most visible cable runs first, since those usually make the biggest difference.

Step 6: Secure Loose Wires with Cable Ties and Adhesive Clips

Once the main cable bundles are in place, use cable ties and adhesive clips to tidy up the remaining loose wires.

  • Use cable ties to bundle excess length and keep grouped cables together

  • Use adhesive clips to guide smaller cables along the back edge of the desk or keep them in place where needed

This helps keep cables off the floor and keeps the setup looking tidy.

Step 7: Use Cable Raceway for Visible Areas (Optional)

In many cases, the first six steps will get most under-desk cables looking tidy.
If any cables are still visible, this optional step can help. To achieve a perfectly tidy setup, a raceway can be used to conceal the remaining wires.

A cable raceway is especially useful in situations such as:

  • cables running along desk legs

  • cables facing walls or along the edge of the desk

  • areas where you want cables to follow a clean, intentional path

Installing a raceway in these spots helps make the setup look more deliberate and polished, giving visible cables a neater finish.

Step 8: Check, Adjust, and Clean the Area

Once everything is in place, take a final look over the setup.

Make sure:

  • cables are not pulled too tightly

  • devices are still easy to connect or move if needed

  • no wires are rubbing against sharp edges

  • the floor area is clear and easy to clean

If you have multiple similar cables, now is a good time to label them. Cable labels or colored zip ties make future adjustments much easier—perfect for monitors, chargers, and other desk devices.

Then wipe down the desk area and clean the floor underneath.

Tip: Take an after photo to see the full transformation! It’s always satisfying to compare it with your before shot and admire your tidy setup.
